Pioneer Track Has Strong Performances Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Sacred Heart men's and women's track & field teams won three events and earned severl top-five finishes at this past weekend's 31st Yale Collegiate Invitational at the Coxe Cage.

On the men's side, two Pioneers earned victories in sophomore John Wlasuk in the shot put and junior Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) in the mile.  Wlasuk bested the field in the shot with a toss of 51'3.00".  Junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) recorded a pair of top-five finishes in the shot and weight throw.  Troiani was second in the weight throw with a heave of 53'9.25".  Troiani took fourth inthe shot, throwing 49'1.75".  Senior Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) finished third in the wieght throw with a distance of 51'06.50".

Peterson took the gold in the mile run with a time of 4:13.37.  Freshman Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) ran third in the mile, with a time of 4:21.67. 

For the second-straight week, junior distance runner Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) came home with a first place finish.  At last week's Army Invitation, Castrogivanni won the 5,000 meters.  This week, she was the only runner to come in under the 10 minute mark in winning the 3,000 meters.  Castrogivanni clocked in at 9:59.06 to lead three runners in the top-five.

Castrogivanni, the NEC Track Athlete of the Week last week, has now qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.

Seniors Alyssa Selmquist (Northford, CT) and Megan Papp (Niantic, CT) finished third and fourth, respectively.  Selmquist clocked in at 10:09.70 and Papp finished in 10:16.83.

In the field events, junior Lindsay Aponte (West Islip, NY) continued her strong start with a second place finish in the shot put.  Aponte turned in a throw of 45'3.75".  Freshman Adaroa Nwodili (Coram, NY) had a sixth place showing with a toss of 40'11.00".  In the weight throw, junior Kolbi Smith (Valatie, NY) took third with a throw of 52'5.25".

Back on the track, sophomore Ashia Wright (Cheshire, CT) ran second in the 60 meter dash, clocking at 7.82 seconds.

Both Pioneer teams have a pair of meets this week starting on Thursday with a quad meet at Boston University with Boston College, BU and UMass.  This weekend, SHU will compete at the Harvard University Multi-Events meet.
