Patrick Peterson Wins 800 m as SHU Takes Fourth at NEC's
LANDOVER, MD (February 10, 2013) – Sacred Heart junior Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) won the individual title in the 800 meters in Northeast Conference record time on Sunday as the Pioneers finished fourth overall at the 2013 NEC Championship at the Prince George Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD.
Peterson bested the field with a time of 1:51.89, winning the race while setting a new Northeast Conference record in the 800 meters. Peterson breaks the previous mark of 1:52.08 set by Isaiah Cartledge of LIU Brooklyn at the 2004 NEC meet. The time also surpassed the IC4A qualifying standard.
The Pioneers picked up 11 points in the weight throw event with three top-seven finishers. Leading the way was Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) who finished fourth overall with a season-best throw of 57'0.25". R-Junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) followed up his fifth place finish in the shot put with a fifth place finish in the weight throw. Troiani registered a season-best toss of 56'7.25". Both Wagner and Troiani met the IC4A qualifying standard. John Wlasuk took seventh with a throw of 52'11.50", a season-best distance.
SHU rookie Gregory Hazell (Airmont, NY) took fourth in the long jump on Saturday and scored again for the Pioneers on Sunday, taking second in the triple jump. Hazell ended his first NEC Championship experience with a season-best leap of 47'9.25" to collect eight points in the event and also meet the IC4A qualifying standard.
In the high jump, freshman Jordan Dudley (Stratford, CT) and junior Drayke Jackson (East Northport, NY) finished sixth and seventh to score points for Sacred Heart. Dudley earned a sixth place finish clearing the bar at 6'2". Drayke also cleared the height of 6'2".
On the track, senior Jeremy Rosado (Brooklyn, NY) placed third in the 60 meter hurdles with a season-best time of 8.21 seconds, qualifying for IC4A's. Freshman Daniel Graw (Nesconset, NY) finished eighth in the 400 meter final, running a time of 51.28 seconds.
The men's distance medley relay team of Peterson, Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY), senior Justin McLoughlin (West Hurly, NY) and senior Nicholas Arena (Brewster, NY) placed fifth in the field with a time of 10:29.42
On Saturday, SHU picked up points in the long jump, pole vault and shot put. In the pole vault, senior Scott Polis (East Patchogue, NY picked up six points for the Pioneers thanks to a third place finish. Polis cleared a height of 14'9". SHU picked up nine points in the long jump with Hazell and junior Brandon Hutchinson (Bay Shore, NY) nabbing fourth and fifth place.
