EASTON, MA (May 12, 2013) - Sacred Heart junior Patrick Peterson (Gloversville, NY) took home the New England title in the 800 meters as the Pioneers finished seventh overall at the New England Championship held at Stonehill College over the weekend. The Sacred Heart men closed out the weekend with 10 All-New England performances.
Peterson ran a blazing 1:48.10, his fastest time of the season, and in the process tied the New England meet record set way back in 1977 by Mark Lech of Northeastern who also posted a time of 1:48.10. Peterson won the 800 meters at this year's NEC Indoor Championships and then followed that up with a win in the mile at the New England Indoor meet. Peterson finished sixth last season in the 800, making it two-straight seasons earning All-New England honors.
The Pioneer throwers had another stellar weekend as senior Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY), r-junior Marc Troiani (Valhalla, NY) and sophomore John Wlasuk (Newtown, CT) all came away with All-New England honors while turning in season-best throws at this year's meet.
Troiani followed up his All-New England honors in the shot put and discus at last spring's meet but duplicating the feat this season. Troiani took home fifth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 54'1.00". In the discus, Troiani placed sixth overall with a toss of 150'3.00".
Wlasuk earned All-New England honors in the discus, shot put and hammer while competiing at his first ever New England title meet. Wlasuk turned in a second place finish in the discus, unleashing a throw of 158'2.00". He finished right behind Troiani in the shot put with a sixth place finish registering a distance of 53'10.50", his best of the season. Finally, he wrapped his weekend with an eighth place taking in the hammer thanks to a throw of 177'8.00", another season-best.
Wagner had his best throw of the season in the hammer to earn himself a sixth place finish and All-New England honors for the first time. Wagner turned in a throw of 179'7.00".
Sophomore Gregory Hazell (Airmont, NY) earned All-New England honors in both the long jump and triple jump events. Hazell had a season-best leap of 45'11.25" in the triple jump to finish seventh overall. He took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 20'10.50".
The SHU 4x100 meter relay team of senior Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT), freshman Daniel Graw (Nesconset, NY), sophomore Warner Cooley III (Central Islip, NY) and freshman Jordan Dudley (Stratford, CT) took home fourth to earn All-New England accolades. The foursome clocked in at 42.15 seconds.
