The Sacred Heart Pioneer men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed in a quad meet on Thursday against Boston College, Boston University and the University of Massachusetts. The Pioneers finished third on both sides but had a combined 10 New England Championship performances and one ECAC Championship qualifying performance at the event.
Sophomore Athalia Smith (New Britain, CT) won the weight throw and finished second in the shot put. Her toss of 57'7.00" (17.55m) in the weight throw met both the ECAC and New England Championship qualifying distance and moved her into first place on the NEC rankings by one centimeter. Following in the weight throw was sophomores Chantaul Smith (New Britain, CT) and Christine Middleton (Colchester, NY), who join Athatlia in the top-10 NEC rankings. Chantaul Smith finished fourth with a throw of 47'1.50" (14.36m) while Middleton had a personal best throw of 46'4.25" (14.13m). In the shot put, Athalia Smith's throw of 42'0.00" was a personal best, meeting New England standards and moving her into fourth in the NEC rankings.
Junior Angelica Johnson (Little Ferry, NJ) finished second in the 55 meter dash with New England Championship qualifying time of 7.21 seconds. She also turned in a third place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.90, also a New England qualifying time. Freshman Julianne Cappadona (North Attleboro, MA) finished fifth in the 55 meters with a time of 7.47 seconds and seventh in the 200 meters in 26.24 seconds
Junior Kimberly DeLoreto (Hillsdale, NJ) finished fifth in the mile, breaking her own school record in the event with a New England qualifying time of 5:04.81. She now takes over the top-spot in the NEC Indoor rankings for the mile event. In the 1,000 meters, freshman Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY) and senior Sarah Tencza (Succasunna, NJ) finished third and fourth, clocking in at 3:04.17 and 3:05.14, respectively. In the 3,000 meters, junior Samantha Troy (Lebanon, CT) ran in fifth with freshman Megan Papp (Niantic, CT) in seventh. Troy boasted a time of 10:36.07 with Papp in at 11:06.43.
Freshman Sandie Heholt-Leeds (Henderson, NV) took fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:08.62. In the 800 meters, sophomore Brigid Paddock (Stony Brook, NY) finished fourth followed by DeLoreto in fifth. Paddock posted a time of 2:21.40, moving her to second in the NEC rankings with DeLoreto clocking in at 2:23.52. The SHU 4x400 team took second in the event with a time of 4:04.78.
In the pole vault, senior Kerry Ojeda (Coram, NY) finished second at 10'11.75" (3.35m) as she continues to lead the NEC rankings in the event. Sophomore Ashley Matakevich (Stratford, CT) broke into the NEC top-eight in the long jump and the triple jump. Matakevich finished second in the triple jump at 36'2.25" (11.03m) and third in the long jump with a leap of 17'4.25" (5.29m).
Sophomore Bertony Jean-Louis (Norwalk, CT) won the 200 meters and finished second in the 55 meter dash, both in New England qualifying times. Jean-Louis, who leads the NEC rankings in the 200 meters, took the top-spot with a clocking of 22.27 seconds. Freshman teammate Joshua Roman (Seymour, CT) also met the New England qualifying standard finishing second with a time of 22.56 seconds, ranking sixth among NEC runners. Freshman Matthew Lyhne (Wethersfield, CT) ran in 22.75 seconds, moving him to eighth in the NEC rankings. In the 55 meters, Jean-Louis was second in 6.58 seconds. Roman ran fourth in the event in 6.89 seconds.
In the 55 meter hurdles, junior Peter Conti (Mansfield, MA) finished second in a personal best 7.77 seconds, a New England qualifying time ranking third among NEC runners. Senior Jason Soule (South Portland, ME) took fourth running in 8.10 seconds. The Pioneer 4x400 relay team of Soule, Roman, junior Scott Kasper (East Longmeadow, MA) and Lyhne took second in the event with a time of 3:23.17, meeting New England qualifying standards. In the 400 meters, Kasper finished third with a time of 51.76 seconds while Soule took fourth in the 500 meters in 1:08.19.
In the pole vault, senior Keith Rowe (Taunton, MA) cleared the bar at a personal best height of 13'11.25" (4.25m) for a second place finish. Junior Daniel Galanto (East Hampton, CT) finished third at 13'5.25" (4.10m). In the long jump, sophomore Joseph Toledo-Quinones (Goton, CT) finished third with a jump of 19'11.50" (6.08m) while Jean-Louis won the triple jump with a leap of 44'7.00" (13.59m). In the shot put, freshman Philip Miccio (Jericho, NY) finished fourth with a throw of 38'3.25" (11.66m) and Rowe took fourth with a throw of 37'2.50". In the weight throw, senior Charles Clark (Babylon, NY) was second with a throw of 44'3.50" (13.50m) and freshman Matthew Wagner (Brookhaven, NY) was third with a throw of 42'11.50" (13.09m).
Both Pioneer teams are back in action on January 22nd and 23rd at the 18th Annual Lehigh John Covert Classic.
