After being out for the majority of the season due to injury, Nick Hunt (Uniondale, N.Y.) led the match with 14 kills on Saturday night as the Sacred Heart Men's Volleyball Team fell to George Mason in three straight sets. Jose Juelle (Guaynabo, PR) hit .312 on the night with five kills on 16 attempts with no errors.
The Patriots dominated the first set taking it 25-14. Hitting errors plagued the Pioneers throughout the set as they committed eight to George Mason's one. Hunt recorded four kills in the set, while Jason Kinney (Salem, N.H.) posted three.
Sacred Heart battled in the second set. Hunt hit .545 with six kills on 11 attempts in his only errorless set, while Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) hit .455 with five kills on 11 attempts. The Pioneers jumped out to a 6-2 lead on Benjamin Thomas (Swansea, Ill.) and Borsay's service runs. The Patriots came back to tie the game at 11, but SHU refused to relinquish the lead and instead capitalized on George Mason's service error by starting a four-point run to take a 15-11 lead. The Pioneers maintained the lead and looked like they were about to tie the match at one set each when George Mason came back to tie the game at 23. From there the teams exchanged points tying at 24, 25 and 26. With the score tied at 26, a SHU service error gave the Patriots the advantage, and on Michael Kvidahl's kill gave George Mason the set 28-26.
The Pioneers only hit .029 in the final set in which they fell 25-19. The held close for most of the set tying the score on five occasions before taking a three point lead, 15-12, but the Patriots responded with a with a seven-point run for a 19-15 lead. From there Sacred Heart was never able to string anything together to catch up.
Next weekend, SHU travels to IPFW on Friday night and Ball State on Saturday.
