Jason Kinney (Salem, N.H.) led the Sacred Heart Men's Volleyball team in the 3-1 loss to IPFW Friday night with 11 kills. Raymond Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.) posted a .357 hitting percentage as the Pioneers fell to 2-12 on the season.
The Mastodons jumped out to an early 1-5 lead and never looked back. SHU was never able to overcome the deficit and fell 25-17 as IPFW took a 1-0 match lead. Kinney recorded four kills in the first set, while the Pioneers hit just .174 to IPFW's .360.
Sacred Heart evened the match taking the second set 25-20. With the score tied at six, Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) notched a kill kicking off a four-point run to give the Pioneers a lead they would never relinquish. This run forced an IPFW timeout at 10-6. Following the timeout the Pioneers continued to roll as they built their largest lead of the set when a kill by Will LeClerc (Farifield, Conn.) made the score 15-9. The Mastodons were able to narrow the margin to two at 19-17 but a three-point service run by Borsay stretched the lead to four. A final kill by Satagaj closed out the set 25-20 and evened the match one set a piece.
After the break, IPFW shut SHU down in the third set. The Pioneers had a 2-1 lead before the Mastodons embarked on a nine-point run lifting them to a significant 10-2 lead the Sacred Heart could never come back from as IPFW took the set 25-12.
Once again, the Pioneers just couldn't seem to get anything going in the final set of the match. The Mastodons only took a 5-1 lead on Omar Rivera and Eddie Rivera's service runs, but Sacred Heart never came within four before IPFW claimed the set 25-17, clinching the match
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday night at Ball State.
