FAIRFIELD, CONN. (January 17, 2014)—Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) led all players with 15 kills hitting .438. The senior only committed one error as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team completed a three-set sweep of Lindenwood (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) in the 2014 home opener. The Pioneers improve to 1-2 on the young season, while the Lions fall to 0-1.
Sacred Heart made an impact early opening the first set with a 7-2 run featuring two aces from Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) and three kills from sophomore Austin Arcala (Long Beach, Calif.), who led the set with six kills. The Pioneers held on to the lead all the way to the finish line, taking a 1-0 lead with the 25-20 win.
The Pioneers once again jumped out to a quick lead taking the first three points of the second set. This time, Lindenwood came back tying the game and taking its first lead of the match, 15-14, on consecutive SHU hitting errors. The teams exchanged points before an Arcala service run, capped off by a kill from Borsay, lifted Sacred Heart to a 19-16 lead and forced the Lions into a timeout. Despite Lindenwood tying the game again at 21, the Pioneers got the lead again on a kill from Jason Kinney (Salem, N.H.). SHU wrapped the second set with a 3-1 to claim the game 25-22.
The Lions regrouped during the break taking a 3-1 lead early in the third set. Down 15-9, a kill from Mackenzie sparked a 12-2 Pioneer run that put Sacred Heart back on top 21-17. The comeback featured five kills from Borsay, who posted an errorless set hitting .467 recording seven of his 15 attacks for kills. Sacred Heart only allowed the Lions two more point as it went on to take the set 25-22.
Sacred Heart returns to action next Friday when they hose Loyola Chicago at 7:00 p.m.
