FAIRFIELD, CONN. (March 20, 2014)—Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) and Christopher Delucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) led the match tallying 10 kills each as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team swept the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez Tarzans Thursday evening in the William H. Pitt Center. Sophomore setter Benjamin Thomas averaged 12 assists per set as the Pioneers improve to 8-14 on the season.
The Tarzans took a 7-4 lead on Jose Collazo's four-point service run, but Sacred Heart rallied back reclaiming the lead with a Travis Vonholt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) kill which sparked five-point SHU run. The Pioneers maintained the lead and with an ace from Thomas took the set 25-18.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the second half thanks to an 8-2 run. They continued to expand their lead with a three-point service run from Ray Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.), which featured two kills from Borsay. Finally, one of Satagaj's six kills on the night sealed the 25-18 victory for the Pioneers.
After exchanging points to open the third set, Enzo Mackenzie (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) sent down a kill igniting a five-point SHU run, which lifted the Pioneers to a 10-4 lead. The Tarzans answered with a five point run capitalizing on Sacred Heart errors, but it wasn't enough to catch the surging SHU offense as the Pioneers took the set 25-21.
Sacred Heart is back in action next Thursday, March 27 when they host EIVA rival Rutgers-Newark at 7:00 p.m.
