FAIRFIELD, CONN. (March 27, 2014)—Enzo Mackenzie tallied a season best 22 kills while hitting .515 in the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team's sweep of EIVA opponent Rutgers-Newark. Sophomore setter R.J. Uhlir (Norfolk, Neb.) recorded 37 of his sets for assists as the Pioneers improve to 9-13 on the season and 3-7 in conference play.
Sacred Heart dominated the first set taking an early 3-1 lead and never looking back. Up by just two points, 11-9, a kill from Travis Vonholt (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) sent Brad Borsay (Richmond, R.I.) to serve and sparked a six-point SHU run that lifted the Pioneers to a 17-9 lead. A kill from Mackenzie, as part of a 5-1 run, clinched the 25-14 win.
Once again, the Pioneers took a 3-1 lead to open the second set, but the Scarlet Raiders were quick to knot the match at three and even take a one-point lead on Jack Fredericks' three-point service run. Capitalizing on Rutgers-Newark errors, Sacred Heart retook the lead 8-5. The Scarlet Raiders weren't going down easy though as they tied the score eight more times with the final time being 20-20. A Rutgers-Newark service error tipped the score back in the Pioneers' favor and ignited a three-point run that put SHU at set point. Like the first match, a kill from red-shirt junior Mackenzie ended the match 25-21 and gave Sacred Heart a 2-0 match lead heading into the break.
The Scarlet Knights looked like they were on their way to taking a set when they jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set, but behind strong serving from freshman Chris Delucie (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) the Pioneers came back to knot the score at six. The closest set of the match, the score tied nine times before a 6-1 Pioneer run capped off with a kill from sophomore Sean Nelson (East Hampton, Conn.) boosted SHU to a 22-17 lead. A kill from Ray Satagaj (Rocky Hill, Conn.) made it secured the match with the 25-20 set win.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow at Harvard at 7:00 p.m.
