LORETTO, PA - The Sacred Heart men's volleyball team lost a 3-2 (18-30, 29-31, 30-27, 30-21, 15-17) decision to start the 2010 season against a strong Saint Francis (PA) team on the road Saturday afternoon.
After Saint Francis, 2-1, won the first set easily, the Pioneers held a six-point lead at 22-16 in the second set before the Red Flash came storming back. Saint Francis won four of the next five points to close the gap to 23-20. A pair of SHU attack errors a few points later helped the Red Flash get all the way back and take a 28-27 lead.
With the set tied at 29-29, a SHU service error followed by a Jordan Varee kill for the Red Flash gave them the set 31-29.
The Pioneers took the third set 30-27 thanks to eight kills by senior Kalani Efstathiou. Craig Harvey also had five kills, including the match clincher on a set by Tim Sadowski. Sadowski finished with a match-best 55 assists.
SHU forced the fifth set by taking the fourth 30-21. The Red Flash jumped on SHU early in the decider, taking an 8-2 lead. The Pioneers went on an 8-0 run, all on the serve of Roger Parent, to take a 10-8 lead. Saint Francis went on a run of its own and a pair of kills each from Varee and Pete Freyer tied the set at 14-14.
A bad SHU set gave the Red Flash a match point, but Efstathiou kept the Pioneers alive with a kill that tied it at 15-15. Saint Francis won the match on a Nick Rivett kill, followed by a Pioneer attack error.
Efstathiou led the Pioneers with 28 kills. Harvey chipped in 12, while Nick Hunt had 11.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday against Philadelphia Biblical at Ramapo College in New Jersey.
