FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) had 16 kills, while freshman Nick Hunt (Uniondale, NY) hit a blistering .769, recording ten kills without an error, to lead the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-25, 31-29) win over visiting Rivier Friday night.
Efstathiou record half of his match-high kill total in the first set to help the Pioneers to a 30-24 win. The Pioneers held a slim 23-21 lead in the game, but scored seven of the final nine points.
Hunt was perfect in the game with six kills in six attempts, while freshman Adrian Fernandez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) was solid on defense with eight digs.
After the Pioneers took the second set, 30-25, Rivier took control with a flurry early in the third set. Sacred Heart, 13-7, took an early 8-2 lead but the Raiders scored eight straight points, seven of them off the serve of Taylor Lindner. Rivier, 24-8, held the lead for most of the set until the Pioneers pulled even at 25-25 on an Efstathiou kill.
The teams traded points until it was knotted at 29-29. Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) gave SHU a 30-29 lead with a kill off a Tim Sadowski (Salem, NH) set. Match point came on Efstathiou's serve when the Raiders miss hit an attack attempt.
The win was the fourth straight for SHU and fifth in the last six matches. It also avenged an early-seaon loss to the Raiders, 3-2 in a match played at Ramapo College in January.
The Pioneers are back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the Pitt Center against EIVA Hay Division rival Harvard.
