FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomore Mike Komlanc (St. Croix, V.I.) had one of the finest days of his career for the Sacred Heart volleyball team on Sunday afternoon, hitting an incredible .739 with 18 kills, three digs and five blocks to help the Pioneers comeback to defeat NYU 3-1 (25-30, 31-29, 30-10, 30-24).
After losing the first set, the Pioneers came back to win a tight second game, 31-29. It looked like the Pioneers would win it when a Komlanc kill gave SHU a 29-26 lead but NYU won the next three points to tie it. Luke Hamlet led the Violet spurt with a kill, followed by a service ace, but his service error with the score tied at 29-29 gave SHU a set point. Junior Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) ended it for the Pioneers with a kill off a Tim Sadowski set.
The third set was one for the ages for the Pioneers. They hit an amazing .833 with 20 kills in 24 attempts, without making an error. Sophomore Craig Harvey (Beverly, MA) led the assault with eight kills.
Harvey almost single-handedly put the Violets on ice in the four set, winning an amazing ten straight points on his serve to help the Pioneers open up a 17-9 lead.
NYU was led by Patrick Dodd's 17 kills.
