FAIRFIELD, CT - Junior Craig Harvey (Beverly, MA) had a match-high 21 kills and 15 digs and the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team dug out of a 9-6 in the deciding set to get past visiting Stevens Tech (29-31, 31-29, 30-28, 24-30, 15-13) Wednesday night.
In the fifth set the Ducks used strong serving and setting by Brandt Grobeis to jump out early on the Pioneers. A pair of points on the serve of Grobeis gave Stevens a 6-4 lead and forced SHU coach Rob Machan to call a timeout. Grobeis extended the run with a serve and set on a kill by Jon Landis to make it 7-4.
With Stevens leading 9-6, the Pioneers got untracked. A Harvey kill, followed by three straight points off the serve of junior Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) gave SHU a 10-9 lead. The Ducks would tie it at 10-10, but the Pioneers ripped off the next three points to take control. After a Scott Grandpre (E. Greenwich, RI) kill gave SHU a 14-11 lead, the Ducks held off two match points to cut the lead to one. Grandpre put the match away with a kill off a Parent set to raise the Pioneer record to 16-9.
Parent also notched a double-double in the match with 12 kills and 16 digs. Grandpre had the third SHU double dip with ten kills and 12 digs. Freshman Nick Hunt (Uniondale, NY) finished the match with 11 kills and three solo blocks.
Stevens, 19-9, was led by SteFan PremDas with 20 kills and 17 digs, and Landis with 18 kills and 14 digs.
The Pioneers are off until April 12 when they will travel to face Rutgers-Newark in an important EIVA match.
