FAIRFIELD, CT - Senior Kalani Efstathiou (Beaverton, OR) had a match-high 17 kills and fellow senior Scott Grandpre (E. Greenwich, RI) led the Pioneers with 15 digs as the Sacred Heart men's volleyball team defeated the University of New Haven 3-1 (30-18, 30-20, 31-33, 30-19) on senior night in the Pitt Center Wednesday.
The Pioneers, now 17-10, dominated the first two sets before New Haven rebounded in the third. SHU jumped out to an 18-11 lead, but the Chargers used four straight points off the serve of Ben Hollies to close within 18-16.
Julien DuPont ran off three more points on his serve to give New Haven a 22-21 lead, and the two teams jockeyed back and forth for the next several points. At 29-28, the Pioneers had a match point but a service error by Efstathiou gave the Chargers life. With the match tied at 31-31, a service error for the Pioneers, followed by an attack error, gave the Chargers the set.
The Chargers, 5-15, used that momentum to stay even with SHU early in the fourth set. With the game tied 8-8, the Pioneers ran off eight of the next ten points to take command and went on to close out the match.
Juniors Roger Parent (Burlington, CT) and Craig Harvey (Beverly, MA) also had strong games for the Pioneers. Parent notched his ninth double-double of the season with ten kills and ten digs. Harvey finished with 15 kills and eight digs.
Gregg Brisbin led the Chargers with 12 kills.
