SHU Wrestling Opened Dual Season at Journeymen Northeast Duals

TROY, NY - Sacred Heart University Wrestling opened its dual season at the prestigious Journeymen Northeast Duals, taking on George Mason University, University of Buffalo, and # 23 ranked Central Michigan University.

George Mason University topped the Pioneers 34-7 in the opening dual.  Brendan Goldup (Schuylerville, NY) battled back after surrendering an early takedown to record an 8-3 decision over Alex Hunsberger. At 165 lbs., Conan Schuster (Westminster, MD) recorded a major decision over Ryan Forrest, 9-0.

Buffalo knocked off Sacred Heart, 30-9.  Similar to the GMU dual, Goldup found himself battling back after his opponent scored the opening takedown.  Goldup answered back with a reversal and more, by putting his opponent on his back and recording the fall at 2:47. 

In the final dual of the day, Sacred Heart University took on Central Michigan University, ranked 23rd in the nation.  CMU defeated the Pioneers 33-6 but freshman Casey Mitchell (South Windsor, CT) and Tom Filipkowsi (Cutchogue, NY) picked up victories. Mitchell used a late reversal and back points for a 7-6 come from behind win over Malcom Smith. Filipkowsi earned a hard fought 2-1 decision over Austin Severn at 184 lbs.

The Pioneers travel to Boston University this Saturday, December 7th at 5:00 PM to take on Davidson University.  SHU Wrestling will return to Boston University on February 22nd in a dual against the Terriers.
