LANCASTER, Penn – The Sacred Heart University Wrestling team spent the weekend on the mat in Pennsylvania. Friday night, The Pioneers made a visit to Lancaster, Pa to take on Franklin & Marshall. The Diplomats dominated the Pioneers, winning all 10 bouts en route to a 43-0 shutout. Franklin & Marshall took quick control of the dual meet, picking up bonus points in the first six matches and carrying that momentum into the upper-weight classes.
The Pioneers attempted to rally Saturday at the Mid-Penn Duals hosted by Millersville University. Suffering from some injuries from the previous night, the Pioneers where shorthanded and forced to forfeit 125 lbs and 133 lbs. The 12 point deficit proved to be costly for the Pioneers in hard-fought losses to Shorter University (30-10) and Shippensburg University (27-21).
However, Sacred Heart was able to pick up a second dual meet victory of the season in a 19-18 win over Millersville University. The Pioneers were led by Andrew Polidore (Wayne, NJ), Alex Harnsberger (Hillsboro, OR), and Casey Mitchell (South Windsor, CT), who were all 3-0 on the day. Polidore's experience and leadership helped to provide a spark for the Pioneers and rebound from a disappointing dual Friday night. It was a special day for Harnsberger, not only going 3-0, but also tallying his first collegiate victory. Mitchell continues to be impressive in his freshmen campaign, and two of his three victories came at 165 lbs, as he bumped up a weight class to help strengthen the line-up for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart University returns to the mat on Sunday, January 26th against Brown University at 2:00 PM in the William H. Pitt Center.
