PRINCETON, NJ (October 13, 2012) - The Sacred Heart Men's Cross Country team finished 17th Saturday afternoon competing in the Princeton Invitational on West Windsor Field. St. Joseph's (PA) took home the team title on the men's side.
The Pioneers were led by senior Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY), who finished 28th overall with a time of 24:54. Connelly posted a new school record for the 5 Mile/8000 Meter distance. His finish time of 24:54 beat the record of 25:01 that he set just a week earlier at the New England Championships, becoming the first man in program history to go under 25 minutes.
Graduate student Rich Marcello (Foster, RI) crossed the tape in a time of 25:15, good for a 55th place showing. Marcello recorded a personal best, with his 25:15 beating his old best of 25:44 by 29 seconds, and moving him into fourth place on the SHU All-Time list for the 5 Mile/8 K distance.
Rookie runner Sean Ferguson (Smithtown, NY) finished 98th overall with a time of 25:48.
Rounding out the Pioneers top-seven runners where senior Justin Britton in 26:49 (142nd), freshman Nicholas Haile (Merrick, NY) in 27:10 (148th), sophomore Jacob Ustjanauskas (West Hartford, CT) in 27:37 (155th) and freshman Brian Crean in 27:58 (159th).
Four other Pioneers recorded personal bests in the top-seven, including Britton by 9 seconds, Haile by 3 seconds, Ustjanauskas by 4 seconds, and Crean by 47 seconds. Ferguson finished just 3 seconds off of his personal best, but the rookie broke 26 minutes for the second straight week.
The Pioneers will have their final tune-up for the Northeast Conference Championship at the 9th Annual CCSU Mini-Meet on October 19th at Stanley Quarter Park.
