Koelbel Announced as New Assistant Coach of Track/Cross Country

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Head track & field/cross country coach Christian Morrison has announced the hiring of Kayla Koelbel as the new assistant track & field/cross country coach for the men's and women's programs. Koelbel comes to Sacred Heart after serving as an assistant coach at her alma mater, SUNY Cortland, where she was also a four-time individual conference champion and national qualifier.

"I'm very excited to have Kayla joining our staff," Morrison said. "She possesses a blend of intelligence, competence, coaching experience, competitive experience, and enthusiasm, that make her the ideal fit for this position."

Koelbel will assist with coaching the men's and women's cross country teams, plus the middle-distance and distance runners in track and field. She will also assist with administrative aspects of the programs including recruiting, budgeting, rules compliance and other day-to-day tasks.

Koelbel has served as a Performance Coach & Speed Mechanics Specialist at Victory Sports Performance in New York, in addition to an assistant coach at SUNY Cortland from 2016-2018. Over two seasons as an assistant at Cortland, she helped coach student-athletes to 15 NCAA qualifying spots, including nine who earned All-America honors, and one two-time NCAA national champion in the pentathlon and decathlon.

As a student-athlete with the Red Dragons, Koelbel won two conference championships in the pentathlon and heptathlon and was a part of three conference championship teams. In 2016, she qualified for the NCAA Championships in the pentathlon. She holds the SUNYAC championship meet record in the pentathlon, as well as the school record in the 60m hurdles.

Koelbel graduated with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology of coaching from Cortland in 2016 and earned her master's in sports management in May 2018.
