FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 16, 2009) - Sacred Heart cross country runners Andrew Houghtalen (West Charlton, NY) and Olivia Civardi (Brightwaters, NY) were named this week's Road Runner Sports Northeast Conference Athletes of the week. Houghtalen was named the Co-Athlete of the Week while Civardi was named the Rookie of the Week. It is Houghtalen's first career athlete of the week award, he won the league's rookie award once in 2007. Cavardi takes home her first career award after just her first collegiate race.
Houghtalen recorded his first career top-five finish to lead the Pioneers to the team championship at the Fordham Fiasco on Saturday. The junior's time of 27:21.06 on the 8K Van Cortlandt Park course was good for fourth place in a field of 175 runners from 16 teams, including USTFCCCA regionally-ranked Rutgers, Penn and St. Joseph's. Houghtalen led three SHU harriers inside the top-15 and was the top finisher among the four NEC schools competing. The West Charlton, NY native's efforts helped the Pioneers to their fifth win as a program and first since the 2007 season.
In her first collegiate race, Civardi paced the Pioneers at the Fordham Fiasco on Saturday, a competition that featured 181 runners from 18 institutions. The Brightwaters, NY product clocked in at 19:18.36 on the 5K Van Cortlandt Park course to finish ahead of fellow NEC competition from Long Island, Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Francis (NY). Civardi's 23rd-place effort helped SHU take sixth place overall in its season opener.
