Kaitlin Sowinski heads to Lake Como, Italy for the 2010-11 season to play for Pool Comense of the Italy A-1 League. The SHU standout will play her second professional season since leaving Sacred Heart in 2009 having spent one year at CAB Madeira of Portugal. This summer Sowinski was one of six players invited to participate in the Connecticut Sun training camp.
Sowinski had a stellar year in her first professional season averaging 14.4 points and 9.8 rebounds per game. She helped guide her team to an 11-5 record and a third place finish in Portugal's women's league, Portugal-Liga Feminina. She finished 2009-10 averaging a team high 58.2% from the field and added 2.2 blocks per game.
Sowinski was a member of the Sacred Heart 2006 and 2009 Northeast Conference Championship teams and led the Pioneers to a 92-34 record during her four year career, the best four-year stretch in school history. The 6-4 center was a two-time All-Northeast Conference for the Pioneers and was named the 2009 NEC Tournament MVP after leading the Pioneers on a school-record 21-game winning streak that included a perfect 18-0 run through the NEC. She ranks third all-time in scoring at Sacred Heart, collecting 1,541 points and is the the program record holder for blocks in a game (9 - vs. Mount St. Mary's 2/19/07), season (101) and career (326). She ranks sixth all-time in rebounds with 768.
Pool Comense opens their season October 24th with a home contest against Lucca. Last season Sowinski's new team finished sixth in the 12 team A-1 Italian League, the top tier women's league in the country.
