A pair of Pioneers swept the weekly Northeast Conference awards today. Senior forward Callan Taylor (Overland Park, Kan.) was named Choice Hotels NEC Player of the Week, and freshman guard Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) was named Choice Hotel Rookie of the Week.
The Sacred Heart Women's Basketball team is off to a hot start this season, going 2-0 right out of the gate. Taylor and Washington were both big players in the wins over Siena and Columbia last weekend.
In Friday's win, Taylor opened the season by recording her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the 17-point win over the Saints. Sunday, Taylor, again, lit up the scoreboard; this time with 15 points, nearly collecting a second straight double-double nabbing eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. She averaged 14 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2 steals per game on the weekend. The forward posted a league-leading 28 double-doubles over the previous two seasons, and earlier this month was named to the preseason All-NEC Team.
Washington is quickly making her name known on the court, knocking down 14 points in her collegiate debut at Siena. The rookie guard averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in the two wins. Washington, one of the top-rated high school players in Arizona, shot 52.4 percent (11-21) from the floor, and went 6-for-9 from the field.
Callan and Gabrielle will be back on the court Wednesday at home as the Pioneers host the Lehigh Mountain Hawks at 7:00 p.m.
