Sacred Heart NCAA Tournament History... This is the Pioneers third NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years. Sacred Heart earned its first-ever trip after winning the 2006 Northeast Conference Tournament. The 26-4 Pioneers earned a #15 seed and drew the #2 seed Maryland in the first round of the Albuquerque Regional. SHU fell at the hands of the Terrapins, 95-54, as Maryland would then go on to win the National Championship that season. In 2009, the Pioneers were a perfect 21-0 against NEC opponents winning the regular season NEC Title and the Championship game against Saint Francis (PA) for the NCAA bid. Drawing a #14 seed, the Pioneers headed to Ohio State as part of the Berkeley Regional. SHU hung with the #3 Buckeyes, but were defeated 77-63.
SHU vs. Georgia Tech: The Series... The Pioneers have never faced the Yellowjackets in program history, but are 0-4 against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents. Sacred Heart is 0-2 against Maryland, including the 95-54 loss to the Terrapins in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. They are also 0-2 against Boston College.
Experienced Trio... Seniors Callan Taylor (Overland Park, Kan.), Alexis Campbell (Ashburn, Va.) and Kris Iovino (Murrysville, Penn.) were a part of the 2009 team that made it to the big dance. NEC All-Rookie Team member Taylor shot 52.6% (10-19) from the field to put 24 points on the board for Sacred Heart in 36 minutes. Iovino and Campbell also hit the floor in the 77-63 loss.
