Kiley Evans Sets New Career High, Leads SHU to Victory Over Lehigh
Bethlehem, Penn. (December 20, 2012)—Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with a career-high 29 points, as the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team defeated Lehigh 73-63 Thursday night in the Stabler Arena. Ericka Norman (Chino Hills, Calif.) also recorded a new career-high in the win. The sophomore point guard dished 14 assists, superseding her previous career-high of 13 set earlier this season against Sam Houston State. The Pioneers improve to 7-4 on the season with the victory.
Hitting two threes in the first four minutes, Lehigh jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Morgan Merriman (Seattle, Wa.), kicking off her 17-point game, put the Pioneers on the board with a layup plus one, cutting the Mountain Hawks' lead in half just before the 15:43 media time out.
Norman, on the fast break, brought SHU within one, but Lehigh hit back-to-back shots increasing their lead to 12-5. Evans and Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) then added five for the Pioneers before Washington landed her second jumper from the left side to tie to game at 12 and force Lehigh to use a time out.
The teams exchanged points with the Mountain Hawks getting a one-point advantage with back-to-back layups, forcing Sacred Heart Head Coach Ed Swanson to take a time out. Lehigh added two before Washington and Evans combined for a 12-0 run to put SHU up 33-23 with five minutes left in the half.
Lehigh added five in the final minute of the half, but could not catch the surging Pioneers, as Sacred Heart was ahead 35-32 at halftime.
The Mountain Hawks chipped away early in the second half, tying the game at 39 on Becky Guman's triple, but Washington answer with a jumper put SHU back on top. With Lehigh back within one 43-42, Merriman kicked off a six-point streak increasing Sacred Heart's lead to 49-42 with just under 12 minutes to play.
With 10:03 on the clock, Lehigh's Kelly Peterson hit a three-pointer to give the Mountain Hawks their first lead of the half, 52-51. They exchanged buckets with Evans giving SHU the advantage from the top of the arc 59-56.
Enjoli Bland (Queen Creek, Ariz), who led the Pioneers with eight rebounds, capped off another SHU six-point run with a layup giving Sacred Heart a nine-point lead with three minutes left to play.
The Pioneers are back in action for their final game of 2012 on December 30 when they host Siena at 7:00 p.m. in the William H. Pitt Center.
