Late Burst Pushes Pioneers Over Colonials
Moon Township, Penn. (January 21, 2013)—Morgan Merriman (Seattle, Wa.) led the Pioneers with 20 points as a late 18-4 run boosted the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team to the 70-66 win over the Colonials Monday afternoon in the Charles L. Sewal Arena at Robert Morris University. The Pioneers are now an even 3-3 in conference play and 11-7 on the season.
Robert Morris's Anna Gailite and Artemis Spanou combined for the first six points of the game, immediately putting Sacred Heart in the hole. Merriman sunk back-to-back buckets to lessen the Colonial's lead, 6-4, before the first media time out. The Colonials burst out of the timeout with a five-point run increasing their lead to 11-4.
Never being able to catch the surging Colonials, Sacred Heart did come within three, 30-27, on a Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) triple, en route to a 17-point game, with 1:46 left in the first half, but Robert Morris finished off the first half with a seven-point run to head into the break with a 10-point, 37-27, lead.
RMU maintained their 10-point lead through the first media timeout of the second half. The teams exchanged points coming out of the timeout with the Colonials keeping Sacred Heart at bay by at least seven points.
At the low end of a 12-point deficit with nine minutes left in the game, the Pioneers started a 18-4 run with Ericka Norman's (Chino Hills, Calif.) triple from the top of the arc. With 1:29 Blair Koniszewski (Vienna, Va.) tied the game at 64 with a trey, and a minute later Merriman gave Sacred Heart its first lead of the game with a jumper. Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, N.Y.) added two free throws before the buzzer capping off the 70-66 win.
Norman, once again, flirted with a triple double with 14 points, eight assists and six steals in the win.
The Pioneers come back home to face the Monmouth Hawks on Saturday in a rematch of the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship game.
