Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team heads back to Brooklyn to face the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds in the regular season finale Monday night. The Blackbirds (3-14) are looking to snatch one last win before their season ends as their 3-14 record did not get them a spot in the NEC Tournament. The Pioneers hope to pick up the win for a sweep of LIU this season, as SHU defeated them 61-47 in the opening weekend of NEC play.
Last Time Against the Blackbirds... With 12:17 left in the game, Gabrielle Washington landed a jumper kicking off a 17-0 run to boost the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team over LIU Brooklyn, 61-47, January 7 in the William H. Pitt Center. Morgan Merriman picked up the second double-double of her career notching a game leading 20 points and pulling down 10 boards, shooting 61.5% (8-13) from the field. Point Guard Ericka Norman racked up 12 assists with just one turnover, and four steals on the night.
Up Next... The Pioneers are the No. 2 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament and therefore will host the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn this Sunday in the quarterfinals at 2:00 p.m.
Great Starts... In both of their last two games, the Pioneers have put on a show in the first half. Against the Bulldogs Wednesday evening on both ends of the court. Sacred Heart forced Bryant into 19 turnovers in the first half alone, and shot 48.4% from the floor. Morgan Merriman, who led the game, posted 12 of her 18 points in the first half, shooting 50% (5-10). On Saturday, SHU shot 45.2% in the first half going 14-31 from the hardwood. Gabrielle Washington went 5-11 and a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line totaling 14 points in the opening 20 minutes of the win over St. Francis Brooklyn
The Road to the Championship... On Sunday afternoon, the Sacred Heart Women's Basketball Team will face No. 7 St. Francis Brooklyn in the Quarterfinals of the NEC Tournament.Seven teams have already sealed their spot in the 2013 NEC Tournament: Quinnipiac (No. 1), Sacred Heart (No. 2), Monmouth (No. 3), Saint Francis U (No. 4), Mount St. Mary's (No. 5), Central Conn. State (No. 6) and St. Francis Brooklyn (No. 7). Monday night decides the No. 8 seed. It will either be Bryant (7-10), in their first season of post season elligibility, or Fairleigh Dickinson (6-11)
