DUBLIN, IRELAND (Aug. 21, 2013)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team closes out its 10-day tour of Ireland with a 84-49 victory over the Killester Basketball Club Wednesday night. Freshman Caitlyn Abela (South Easton, Mass.) led the team totaling 15 points, while Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) was right behind her with 14. Both players shot well from the court, shooting 50% (4-for-8) and 55% (5-for-9) respectively.
Killester took a quick 6-4 lead in the first half, seemingly holding the Pioneers, but moments later, Washington and Katie Shepard (Lone Tree, Colo.) combined for a 13-point run launching Sacred Heart to a 16-8 lead. SHU gave up just six more points before the quarter's end, leading 22-10 at the buzzer.
Sacred Heart increased its advantage in the second quarter, outscoring Killester 22-11. Abela put up nine points in the quarter. The rookie added a rebound in the second, and would go on to total seven for the game, tying Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) for the team high. SHU's press defense, once again, proved successful as Killester only scored one basket every three minutes in the second quarter.
The Pioneers shot .500 (11-for-22) from the floor in the third quarter, adding putting another 22 points on the board. Senior Blair Koniszewski (Vienna, Va.) led the way in the period with five points and two rebounds, as the Pioneers headed for the fourth quarter up 67-36.
Shelby Hickey (Littleton, Colo.) pulled down four boards in the fourth quarter, which saw eight Pioneers score a single bucket, only Abela recorded more than two points, adding an extra two from the charity stripe. Sacred Heart outscored Killester 16-13 in the final quarter to take the win 84-49.
