Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart women's basketball team opens the 2013-14 season, and the Jessica Mannetti era, Friday night in the William H. Pitt Center against the St. John's Red Storm. While it is the first time in program history these two teams are meeting, it is sure to be a tough match-up as both teams are perennial contenders in their respective conferences. The Pioneers, who finished second in the NEC in 2012-13, were picked to once again finish in second, while the Red Storm was picked to finish third in the Big East this year.
Series Notes... Friday is the first meeting in program history between Sacred Heart and St. John's.
SHU Against Big East... Sacred Heart is 2-11 all-time against Big East opponents. Both wins come over Providence College in SHU's Division I era. On November 18, 2005, the Pioneers opened what would be a championship season with the 65-49 win over the Friars. The next year, they added another win against Providence, this time at home, 76-69. In addition to their one loss to Providence, Sacred Heart is 0-3 against Georgetown, who they lost to last year 90-63 in the first round of the Preseason WNIT, 0-2 against Marquette, 0-3 against Seton Hall, and 0-2 against Villanova, who they will play on November 20 this year.
Scouting the Red Storm... St. John's, who was 18-13 in 2012-13, was picked to finish third in the Big East despite losing its two leading scorers Shenneika Smith and Nadirah McKenith who accounted for 29.9 points per game. The Red Storm ended last season falling to Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 96-90 after being knocked out of the Big East Tournament by Louisville 62-55 two weeks prior.Aliyyah Handford, who averaged 9.4 points per game last season, comes in as the leading returning scorer for the Red Storm.
