Women's Hoops Open ASU Classic Saturday Against Sun Devils
SACRED HEART (2-4) vs. Arizona State (6-1)
GAME 7 * Tempe, Ariz. * Weatherup Center * 11:30 AM MST*
Setting the Scene... The Sacred Heart women's basketball team heads west this weekend to compete in the ASU Classic at Arizona State University following two losses to Siena (58-53) and Iona (86- 62). The Sun Devils, on the other hand, are on a hot streak. After falling to San Diego 53-61 in the second game of the season, ASU has won its last five straight games. The Pioneers will look to veterans Ga- brielle Washington (18.2 ppg) and Ericka Norman (8.7 ppg) in their quest to upset ASU.
Series Notes... This is the first meeting between the Pioneers and the Arizona State Sun Devils.
SHU Against PAC-12... This is the first time in program history that the Sacred Heart women's basketball team will face a PAC-12 member.
The Head Coaches... Jessica Mannetti is in her first season as a collegiate head coach when the Pioneers tip-off in 2013-14. She comes to Sacred Heart after spending the past four seasons as an as- sistant coach at Hofstra University on Krista Kilburn-Steveskey's staff. While at Hofstra, Mannetti helped guide the Pride to a 72-55 record as well as a pair of appearances in the WNIT... The winningest coach in Sun Devils history, Charli Turner Thorne enters her 17th season at the helm of Arizona State needing just 11 victories to move into the No. 2 spot on the Pac-12's career wins list. Thorne has led the Sun Devils to the postseason 13 of the last 14 years, including a school record five-straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2005-2009.
Up Next... The Pioneers will complete play in the ASU Classic Sunday against either Long Beach State or Harvard. Sacred Heart is 2-3 all-time against the Harvard Crimson dating back to 1998, but it would be another first if SHU draws Long Beach State.
