FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 21, 2014)—Gabrielle Washington (Mesa, Ariz.) of the Sacred Heart women's basketball team was named to the All-Metropolitan second team by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Monday morning. This is Sacred Heart's first year belonging to the MBWA.
This season, Washington made history becoming the first player in the Northeast Conference to record back-to-back 30+ point games when she tallied 35 against Robert Morris and 32 against Saint Francis U in the opening weekend of conference play. She nearly made it three games in a row when she scored 28 against Mount St. Mary's the following weekend. She outdid herself in the Pioneers' last game of the season in the first round of the NEC Tournament against SFU. The All-NEC first team selection broke both the program's single-game scoring record, which stood for 29 years, and the NEC Tournament record when she scored 47 points in SHU's 132-124 double overtime loss to the Red Flash.
The Mesa, Ariz. native leads the Pioneers and is sixth in the league with 17.6 points per game after recording 11 20+ point performances in the regular season. Scored 23 points in an overtime bout with Big East opponent Villanova, the former NEC Rookie of the Year and two-time All-NEC second team selection recorded her 1,000th career point.
