Kimmel Eclipses Pair of Milestones in SHU's Loss to Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA (December 20, 2015)—Hannah Kimmel (Harpursville, N.Y.) passed a pair of milestones in the first half of Sunday's game reaching 900 points and 500 rebounds. The RS-junior fell just one rebound shy of her sixth double-double of the season as the Sacred Heart women's basketball team fell 83-46 to Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center. Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) led the Pioneers with a season-best 16 points as SHU falls to 2-8 on the season.

The Pioneers conclude the non-conference slate on December 29 when they welcome Buffalo to the William H. Pitt Center for a 7:00 p.m. game.



  • Kimmel passed two career milestones in the first half of the game. With 4:08 remaining in the first quarter, the RS-junior tallied the 900th and 901st points of her career with her first field goal of the game. Less than two minutes into the second quarter, she pulled down her third rebound of the game and the 500th of her career
  • Ettienne, in her first start of the season, recorded a season-high 16 points and eight rebounds
  • Erin Storck (Commack, N.Y.) posted a new career best seven points

Inside the Box Score:

  • Lindsey Spann led all players with 23 points. The RS-sophomore was just one of four Lady Lions in double-figures as Brianna Banks tallied 17, and Teniya Page and Kaliyah Mitchell added 15 each. Mitchell added 11 rebounds to her point total for a double-double
  • The SHU bench outscored Penn State's 11-9

First Quarter:

  • PSU opened the game with three straight points before Kimmel landed two-of-two from the line to make it a one-point game
  • A minute later, Brianna Banks went on a five-point run for the Lady Lions expanding their lead
  • After Ettienne banked in a shot, Penn State continued to score putting four more points on the board before Kelcey Castro (Fairlawn, N.J.) drained a three making it 12-7 in favor of the Lady Lions
  • With 4:08 remaining in the period, Kimmel halted a five-point PSU run with a jumper recording the 900th and 901st points of her career
  • Down 20-9, Ettienne sparked a six-point SHU run while the Pioneers held Penn State through nearly the final four minutes of the period. With the Lady Lions scrambling for a basket as the final seconds ticked away, Mitchell was sent to the line for two shots with 1.8 seconds remaining. The junior made both shots to give PSU a 22-15 lead heading into the second quarter

Second Quarter:

  • With 8:18 on the clock, Kimmel pulled down her third rebound of the game for an even 500 career rebounds
  • Penn State started the second quarter with nine unanswered points before Adaysha Williams (LaCrosse, Wis.) opened SHU scoring with a layup with 6:54 left in the period
  • SHU did the majority of its second-quarter scoring after the 4:32 media getting threes from Storck and Kimmel before Cleo Polyzou (Athens, Greece) added four points in the final 36 seconds lessening the gap to 11 points, 39-28, at halftime

Third Quarter:

  • The teams exchanged baskets in the first five minutes of the quarter with the Lady Lions outscoring SHU just 7-6 before the 4:58 media timeout. Both teams hit three field goals; the only difference being Mitchell's and-one basket
  • Penn State came out of the media timeout with seven straight points, five of which were from Spann, expanding its lead to 55-34
  • The Lady Lions had their best quarter of the game in the third, as PSU outscored the Pioneers 23-10 to go into the final 10 minutes of the game with a 62-38 lead

Fourth Quarter:

  • Peyton Whitted landed a layup to open the fourth quarter, but Ettienne answered with one of her own sparking a six-point SHU streak
  • PSU held Sacred Heart scoreless for through the next seven minutes as the Lady Lions improved their lead to 80-44
  • Ettienne managed a last minute basket for the Pioneers bringing her to a season-best 16 points
