Women's Basketball Season Ends with WNIT Loss to Drake

DES MOINES, IOWA (March 17, 2016)—The Sacred Heart women's basketball team's season came to a close Thursday night as the Pioneers fell to Drake 95-59 in the first round of the WNIT. Adaysha Williams (LaCrosse, Wis.) paced SHU with 15 points shooting 45.5% from the field, as Cleo Polyzou (Athens, Greece) had the best performance of the season. The rookie tallied a career-best 11 points going 4-6 from the floor. The NEC Regular Season Champion Pioneers end the 2015-16 campaign 20-13.

Noteworthy:

  • Polyzou tallied a career-high 11 points going 4-6 from the floor and was perfect from downtown (3-3)
  • Lizzy Wendell led the game with 24 points, just one of five Bulldogs that reached double-digit scoring

First Quarter:

  • The Bulldogs jumped out to a 12-0 lead before Kelcey Castro (Fair Lawn, N.J.) put the Pioneers on the board with a layup. The senior's bucket couldn't get anything going for SHU though as Wendell answered with an open lay-in of her own
  • Two minutes later, Hannah Kimmel (Harpursville, N.Y.) picked the ball before Drake got to the half court line bringing it all the way to the hole to make it 14-4
  • Eight straight points for the Bulldogs pushed their lead to 21 points, 25-4, with 2:31 remaining in the period
  • Landing two shots from the foul line, Williams sparked the SHU offense. On the next possession, the junior tacked on three more before Lerae Ettienne (Kensington, Md.) capped off the seven-point run, and Sacred Heart's scoring in the first quarter, with a layup
  • Sara Rhine managed to bank in a shot at the buzzer to send the Bulldogs into the second quarter with a 27-11 lead

Second Quarter:

  • The teams exchanged points to open the second quarter, with SHU cutting Drake's lead to 15 points with a Kimmel trey, but the Bulldogs extended their lead back to 20 points using an 8-3 streak
  • A pair of free throws from Rhine with 2:30 left in the half gave Drake its largest lead of the night, 24 points, 46-22
  • Shelby Hickey (Littleton, Colo.) got the final say in the first half, draining a three from the right wing with 12 seconds on the clock, making it a 50-29 game at the break

Third Quarter:

  • The third was the Pioneers' highest scoring period of the game as they went on to put 20 points on the board
  • Ettienne kicked off a six-point SHU run in the final minute of the period, but Wendell found the hoop at the buzzer

Fourth Quarter:

  • Erin Storck (Commack, N.Y.) landed the first basket of the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs quickly answered before Williams drained her second triple of the night with 8:33 remaining in the game
  • With Drake up 78-54, a three-pointer from Emma Donahue was the first of four consecutive field goals for the Bulldogs
  • Polyzou attempted to halt the streak with her third three of the game, but the Bulldogs ended the game with seven straight points to advance to the second round of the WNIT
