Haines Records New Career High 22 Points, As SHU Falls 58-56 to Fairleigh Dickinson

Hackensack, N.J. (February 6, 2017)— The Sacred Heart women's basketball team travelled to Stratis Arena on Monday to take on the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson, where they would eventually fall 58-56.  Katherine Haines would record a new career high 22 points as she shot 9-15 from the floor.  Adaysha Williams would finish in double digits as well recording 13 points for the Pioneers.

 

FDU's Rainey Cox opened scoring for the two teams as she hit a shot beyond the arc, and a pair of free throws to put the Knights up 5-0 early, Sacred Heart's Williams would respond with a layup to move the score to 5-2 with 7:25 remaining in the first quarter. The Pioneers would get hot going on a 12-2 run, with Williams, and Tykera Carter adding buckets from downtown to put the Pioneers up 12-7. The Knights would go on a run of their own, as each team would end the first quarter with the score tied 14-14.

 

Williams would open up the second quarter with a fast break layup, but the Knights would respond in their next possession to keep the score tied 16-16. Each team would exchange a pair of baskets, till a Knight turnover would lead to a Hannah Kimmel jumper, putting the Pioneers up 20-18. Haines was a force in the paint, adding a pair of baskets for the Pioneers, extending the lead to 24-20, as that score would hold to go into the half.

 

Williams continued to carry the Pioneers adding another basket to open up the second quarter, which would be followed by a bucket from beyond the arc from Shelby Hickey. The Knights would respond with a made layup, and free throw to hold the score 29-23 with 8:15 remaining in the third. Haines would stay dominant in the paint, as she would tally a layup. Kimmel would be right behind her in the next possession adding a jumper of her own to give the Pioneers a 10 points lead 33-23 with 7:16 left in the third. The Pioneers would go on a 5-2 run, all points coming from Haines, with SHU leading the Knights 38-29 with 3:00 remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Pioneers out scored the Knights 18-13 in the third quarter, and held a nine-point lead 42-33.

 

The Knights came out guns blazing in the final quarter as they jump to a 14-5 run, and close SHU's gap. Pioneers still leading 47-45. The Pioneers found themselves in foul trouble early as they reached their five foul limit. The Knights would gain their first lead of the game after a made triple with 4:55 remaining, to move the score to 55-53. Haines would have no issue putting the team on her back as she added a layup, along with an "and one" to tie the score at 56-56 with a little over two minutes remaining. Williams would run the clock down at the top of the key looking to gain the final advantage for SHU, but a missed layup from Haines would give the Knights the ball with 13.5 seconds remaining in the game. FDU would snag a layup with .07 seconds remaining as the Pioneers would go on to fall 58-56.

 

 

 

Noteworthy:

  • Haines would record her new career high, 22 points. She would finish the night shooting 9-16 from the floor 
  • Haines was just one board shy of recording her fifth double-double of the season she she finished the night with nine rebounds.

 

Inside the Box:

  • Fairleigh Dickinson gave the Pioneers trouble in the paint, as they would out rebound the Pioneers 22-15 in the first half. 10 of the Knights 22 rebounds were offensive boards
  • The Pioneers shot a respectful .440 (11-25) from the field in the first half of the game, and forced the Knights to shoot .258 (8-31) from the field.
  • The Pioneers shot .434 from the field, and Knights finished the game shooting .368. FDU would shoot 9-17 from the field in the closing quarter to secure the win

  • In the closing seconds of the game Fairleigh Dickinson's Madelynn Comly would add a layup off the inbound with. .05 seconds remaining. SHU would have one last effort to close out the game but wouldn't be able to hold on as SHU would fall 58-56
