FAIRFIELD, Conn. (January 4, 2009) - Sacred Heart junior Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) and freshman Kiley Evans (Cazenovia, NY) were named the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Player and Rookie of the Week announced Monday by the league office.
Apo averaged 19.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 4.7 rebounds over Sacred Heart’s final three non-conference games, two of which were wins. The 5-foot-9 guard shot 48 percent (20-of-41) during the stretch, which began with a 67-59 road victory at Binghamton on December 21. Following 12 points and four assists against the Bearcats, Apo closed out the 2009 calendar year by posting back-to-back 20-point performances. Her game-high 26 points, which came on 9-for-15 shooting, eight assists, five rebounds, and four steals powered the Pioneers past local rival Yale. The reigning NEC Player of the Year poured in another 21 points to go along with eight assists on the road at Siena. Apo, who has scored in double digits during every game this season except for the season opener, heads into Northeast Conference play as the league’s second-leading scorer (17.0 ppg).
Evans totaled 40 points during a pair of Pioneers’ victories that allowed Sacred Heart to finish its non-conference slate with a 7-4 record. In SHU’s three games since December 21, the freshman guard averaged 15.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.0 steals. Her 24 points, six, rebounds, and three assists helped Sacred Heart sink Binghamton for its fifth road win of the season. Following her 8-for-15 shooting performance before a number of friends and family members, the Central New York native totaled 16 points and five rebounds in the Pioneers’ nine-point defeat of rival Yale. Evans shot 45.9 percent (17-of-37) from the floor over the three-game span, including a 4-for-10 clip from downtown. Apo and Evans lead the Pioneers in to action against three NEC schools this week, facing Monmouth, Wagner and Mount St. Mary's.
