FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 1, 2010) - Sacred Heart's Alisa Apo (Freehold, NJ) and Kiley Evans took home the Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week awards announced on Monday. Apo earns her second award this season and was named the Co-Player of the Week with Saint Francis (PA)'s Allison Daly while Evans picked up her third rookie nod of the season.
Apo powered the Pioneers' offense over a pair of road victories that keep the defending NEC champions in a tie for first place atop the league standings. The junior guard averaged 19.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per contest as SHU outlasted Mount St. Mary's and Wagner. The reigning NEC Player of the Year notched her fifth 20-point game of the season at the Mount where she led all scorers with 20 while adding eight rebounds and three steals in a 51-47 triumph. Two days later, Apo tallied 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in a 71-64 win over Wagner. She made 3 of 5 attempts from downtown and 12 of 15 from the line over the two-game stretch.
Evans's third NEC Rookie Award comes thanks to a pair of double-digit scoring efforts in last week's games at Mount and Wagner. The 5-foot-9 freshman averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over two NEC victories. Evans accounted for more than 25 percent of the Pioneers' offense by scoring 13 points in a 51-47 win at the Mount. Tallying her highest single-game point total since scoring 24 in a road win at Binghamton on Dec. 21, Evans poured in 20 points to go along with seven rebounds to end the week at Wagner. The host Seahawks twice cut Sacred Heart's lead to five points in the second half, and twice Evans answered. Her steal and ensuing layup gave the Pioneers a 44-37 lead 4:16 after halftime and her two free throws provided the final 71-64 margin with 0:08 remaining. Evans' 10.9 points per game averaged is second amongst NEC freshmen this season.
