Fairfield, CT - The SHU women's bowling team moved up two spots to #8 in the National Tenpins Coaches Association poll released earlier this week. The defending Northeast Conference champion Pioneers are 35-14 entering the holiday break. Sacred Heart occupies what would be the eighth and final spot in the 2011 NCAA tournament, as SHU looks to find its way into the championship field after a two year absence.
University of Maryland-Eastern Shore picked up 16 first-place votes to become the top ranked team in collegiate bowling. The Pioneers knocked off UMES in the only meeting between the two sides this season, a 956-928 traditional team game decision at the FDU New Jersey Jamboree. NEC rivals Fairleigh Dickinson (2nd), Kutztown (7th), New Jersey City (9th), and Adelphi (10th) join Sacred Heart in the national top-ten. The biggest surprise in the first half of the season is Sam Houston State who started the year unranked but has vaulted up to fifth in the latest poll.
The Pioneers return to NCAA action January 28th as they travel to Pennsylvania for a three-day tournament hosted by Kutztown.
