The #8 Sacred Heart women's bowling team entered the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament as the second seed but dominated the opening day of the event. The Pioneers lost just one match in three best of seven series, completing sweeps in each of their first two contests. Sacred Heart finished the day with a 4-1 victory over national number one Fairleigh Dickinson, the top seed in the tournament.
Sacred Heart (74-34), the 2010 NEC Champions, started its drive for the 2012 crown with a convincing 4-0 triumph over LIU Brooklyn. The Pioneers downed the Blackbirds by scores of 236-192, 215-195, 200-173, and 195-180. SHU used the same five person lineup in throughout the day, which consisted of Savannah Zientara (Lewiston, NY), Erin Weinmann (Temple, PA), Nicole Trudell (Coventry, RI), Jacqueline Willy (Clarence, NY), and Jackie Carbonetto (Blauvelt, NY).
The Pioneers routed St. Francis (NY), the tournament's sixth seed, in the next round with four decisive decisions. SHU knocked off the Terriers with monster games of 279-158, 239-106, 235-104, and 207-179.
Sacred Heart met up with #1 Fairleigh Dickinson with a trip to the championship match on the line in the double elimination event. The Pioneers took the first game with a 201-176 triumph before both teams stepped up their play in the next two matches. However, SHU raised the bar a bit higher than the Knights could reach, going up 3-0 on the strength of a 253 followed by a 256. FDU was able to avoid the sweep with a game four win but Sacred Heart punched its ticket to the finals with a 225 in the fifth game.
The Pioneers opponent in tomorrow's championship tilt is still to be determined but it will either be #1 Fairleigh Dickinson or #12 New Jersey City. The Northeast Conference Championship match is scheduled for 12:00 pm and will be streamed live at www.NortheastConference.TV.
