The Sacred Heart Women's Bowling Team finished second at the Virginia Union Invitational at Bowl America Lanes in Midlothian, Va. over the weekend. The Pioneers went 7-1 in qualifying, losing only to Central Missouri 1049-914 on Day 2 in a team match. On Sunday, they fell to Central Missouri again in the Championship Match 4-2. Senior Jackie Carbonetto (Blauvelt, N.Y.), who led Sacred Heart on Day 1 averaging 21.42 per frame, was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Day 1 started with a bye for Sacred Heart before sweeping the four-match day. The Pioneers topped St. Augustine 993-825, Virginia Union 896-726, Shaw University 895-594 and Virginia State 897-774 in baker matches.
Day 2, which was all team matches, started with the loss the Central Missouri, but Sacred Heart rebounded and won the final three matches over Chowan (910-622), Bowie State (980-808) and Elizabeth City State (968-930). Nicole Trudell (Coventry, R.I.) led the team against Central Missouri and Elizabeth City State shooting 207 and 216 respectively. Carbonetto's 227 led against Chowan, and Jacqueline Willy (Clarence, N.Y.) bowled a 215 to lead the team over Bowie State.
The Pioneers used three 200 games to defeat host school Virginia Union 4-0 in the first round of match play. Then, in the semi-finals, they shut out Bowie State 4-0.
Sacred Heart saved their best performance of the day for the most important match, missing no spares in the Championship Match against Central Missouri. The Pioneers bested the Mules averaging 206.3 to their 204.0, but lost in head-to-head match play 4-2 (170-200, 234-185, 214-223, 246-170, 179-208, 195-238).
The Pioneers finish the first semester with a 20-13 record. They are back in action after winter break the weekend of January 25 at the KU Invitational.
