BROOKINGS, SD - Five Pioneer team members flew to South Dakota State last week for English and Western NCAA competitions. According to SHU head coach Sloane Milstein, the Pioneers competed well and had a very successful competition.
On Friday, the team had the opportunity to have a short reining clinic with SDSU western coach Joe Humphery.
On Saturday, the team rose early to a balmy -7 degrees for the first day of competitions. Freshman Devan Beaulieu received the highest score in the jumping phase and both she and sophomore Alyssa Woronik scored points, with raw scores of 84 and 76 respectively. Woronik received the highest raw score on the flat and received a point for the Pioneers.
After the English show the Pioneers continued their long day with a western competition. Devan Beaulieu and Adrianna Dattoli competed with minimal western experience and performed extremely well. Although no points were scored in the horsemanship phase, the raw scores were very close. Overall SDSU scored 292.5 and SHU scored 270.
On the second day of competition, the pioneers continued to compete well and saw the overall raw scores stay close with SDSU getting 297.5 and the Pioneers 280.5 for horsemanship. Woronik again received a point for the Pioneers.
