(Pughkeepsie, NY) - The Pioneer Womens Fencing Team got off to a 4-2 start to the dual match season on Sunday with wins over Drew University (24-3), Hunter College (22-5), CCNY (17-10) and Yeshiva University (20-7). Their two losses came against Stevens Tech (18-9) and Haverford College (20-7).
Sophomore team captain Jayme Smith (16-2) and freshman Natalie Rossetti (15-3) led the way for the foil squad as they finished the day at 38-15. Epee was led by sophomore Colleen Mason (14-4) and Brooke Perlee (11-7) as they posted a 31-23 squad record. Sophomore saber fencer Lauren Cebello also had a strong performance and went 12-4.
"I am very pleased with how the team performed on Sunday", said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "We graduated five seniors last year and had to fill four starting positions. This was a great result considering all the new faces that we have in the starting lineup. I was very happy with the overall performance of the epee squad. Our starting lineup of Mason, Perlee, and Graziosi is solid and it allowed us to move Rossetti to foil, where she was a three-time Connecticut all-state selection. It is nice to have Natalie (Rossetti) teaming up with Jayme Smith in foil. Lauren Cebello was very patient last season as our senior driven saber squad had a very successful year. She worked hard last year in a support role and is now doing a great job for us as a starter. We hope to have Elena Tringa back for next semester, and if this happens they will be a great saber tandem for us."
The Team is back in action at MIT on Saturday, November 20th at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet where they will take on MIT, Brandeis, Wellesley, Brown, Boston College, and New Hampshire.
