Pioneers Compete at NCAA Regionals

(Poughkeepsie, NY) - Sacred Heart University hosted the 2011 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship Competition this past weekend at Vassar College.  The Pioneer women were represented by Jayme Smith and Natalie Rossetti in foil, Colleen Mason in epee, and Lauren Cebello in saber.  Jayme Smith finished 15th and Natalie Rossetti 18th, with both of them narrowly missing advancing to the 12 fencer final round.  Lauren Cebello placed 28th in saber and Colleen Mason 36th in epee.

"I am very pleased with the performances of our foilists today," said head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel.  "Both Jayme and Natalie had great seasons and are close to challenging for one of the nine berths available from the Northeast region for the NCAA Championship.  We are very young (3 sophomores and a freshman) and I look forward for all of these fencers to improve next season.

Sacred Heart will be represented at the NCAA Championship next week at Ohio State by Marty Williams in saber and Justin Dion in epee from the men's team.  Last season this duo propelled the Pioneers to an 18th place finish at the Championship.
