Women's Fencing Competes at UPenn Invitational

(Philadelphia, PA) - The Pioneers travelled to the University of Pennsylvania's Hutchinson Gym on Saturday to compete at the 2012 Philadelphia Invitational Tournament.  The Pioneers lost UNC Chapel Hill 15-12, Temple 20-7 and UPenn 15-12 and defeated Drew 26-1 and Haverford 18-9.  The Pioneers are now 13-9 on the season.

Once again team captain junior Jayme Smith led the way with an 8-2 mark, freshman Megan Floyd went 8-5 in epee and junior Elena Tringa was 10-5 in saber.  Smith now sports an impressive 32-14 mark for the year while Floyd's record in 42-22 and Tringa is 42-18.

"While we were pretty successful it was a day of missed opportunities", comments head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel.  "Pre-game preparation was not as focused as I had hoped and we were controlled by very determined UNC squad at the start of the day.  The team really did not hit its stride until the UPenn match, where we gave a much better account of ourselves.  After this we fenced to our potential and were able to dominate the Drew and Haverford  matches.  We need to do a much better job preparing for the big league finale coming up in three weeks.  Hopefully we can turn it around at Yale on Saturday".

The Pioneers are back in action on Saturday, January 28th  when they travel to Yale's Paine-Whitney Gym to take on the Bulldogs.
