(Fairfield, CT) - Northeast Fencing Conference Commissioner Elliot Lilien recently announced the Conference's All Star Selections. Team Captain Jayme Smith was named to the foil All-Conference first team and freshman Megan Floyd was named to the epee All-Conference first team. Floyd will represent SHU at the NCAA Championships this week. Freshman Aileen Trella was named to the foil All-Conference second team. This equals the performance of two seasons ago when Krista Bacci, Elena Tringa and Jayme Smith were Conference All Stars.
It was also announced that Sacred Heart University and Brown University tied for the combined Conference Championship. Both programs sported 20-2 combined mens and womens records this past season, with the SHU men going 10-0 and the women 10-2. Brown's men were 9-1 and their women 11-1 this past season.
"It is very nice to see three of our athletes recognized by the Conference for their athletic excellence,"comments head coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "Floyd and Trella had outstanding freshman seasons and it is great to see that Smith made the first team after just missing this recognition last season. I am also very happy that our women are being recognized for the fine year that they had in the Conference for their contribution to the combined Championship," said Dr. Vrabel. "Their victory over Vassar with Elena Tringa sidelined was a great accomplishment and secured our first ever combined title. Since we only lose two starters from our entire fencing program to graduation, I look for Sacred Heart to again be in contention next season."
The Pioneer'ss season will conclude with Megan Floyd joining Stuart Holmes and Marty Williams from the men's team at the NCAA Fencing Championships at Ohio State. The women's competition will be held on March 22nd and 23rd with the men's completion occurring on March 24th and 25th.
