NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The 2013 BIG ONE Intercollegiate Fencing Tournament was held at Smith College on Saturday with almost 500 fencers competing. Junior epeeist Megan Floyd (Media, Pa.) was the silver medalist and sophomore CJ McCarter (Piedmont, S.C.) was the bronze medalist in foil. Also earning a medal was senior epee captain Natalie Rossetti, who placed 7th. Sacred Heart also got top-16 finishes from Tess Kallmeyer (9th) and Aileen Trella (10th) in foil, Carly Glowacky (13th) and Mia Volpe (15th) in epee and Julia Greene (9th) and Taylor Walsh (10th) in saber.
"This event is always the first indicator to see how well we are prepared for the dual meet season", comments head Coach Dr. Thomas Vrabel. "While we were solid overall, we saw that we still have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks of practice. Megan Floyd had a great day and only fell one touch short of the championship. The entire epee squad was very solid today. CJ McCarter improved on her 5th place finish in this event last season and she has taken over the lead spot in foil from recently graduated Jayme Smith. The rest of the foil and saber starters had good days, but they will have to step it up to be competitive with the top fencers in the league this year. There is no question that the overall talent level in the Northeast Fencing Conference is as high as it has ever been. I do know that we will be ready to do our absolute best and time will tell if that will be good enough to bring home a championship this season."
The Pioneers are back in action on Sunday, November 10th at the Vassar Invitational. Fencing will begin at 10:00 AM.
