PHILADELPHIA, Pa.— The Sacred Heart women's fencing team opened its 2018 slate at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn on Saturday.
The Pioneers started the day with competition against Northwestern (L, 21-6), UNC (L, 18-9), Penn (L, 22-5) and Drew (L, 16-11). SHU ended the event with a 15-12 win over NJIT in the eighth and final round of the day. The foil squad lost a 5-4 round to open the bout. Baily Partridge picked up two wins while Gabrielle Petrie and Gianna DiMartino added one apiece.
It was another 5-4 decision in the Epee as Samantha Abbott and Ashley Cherry both went 2-1 for SHU. It came down to the saber as the Pioneers earned a 7-2 win to pull away with the victory. MacKenna Lamphere picked up three straight wins while Hasoni Austin and Remi O'Shaughnessy added two wins respectively to secure the win.
Cherry was 10-5 overall in the epee event and Lamphere added a 9-6 record in the saber for SHU.
The Pioneers will compete next at Yale on Saturday, February 3.
