FAIRFIELD, CT - The Pioneer women's fencing team traveled to New York on Wednesday to face both Columbia and NYU. Sacred Heart lost to Columbia 19-8 and just fell short against NYU 14-13.
The saber squad once again led Sacred Heart with a 10-8 record, including five wins by freshman Elena Tringa and three wins from senior team captain Krista Bacci. Freshman epeeist Colleen Mason continued her excellent season by posting a 4-2 record and foilist Jayme Smith was 3-3 on the evening.
"I was very happy with the team's performance tonight," said head coach Dr. Tom Vrabel. "Columbia is a perennial power with many returning all Americans, so getting eight wins was a nice accomplishment."
"It was very tough to lose the NYU match but the result was a big improvement from the 17-10 loss that we suffered at their hands back in December," he continued. "Our freshmen trio of Tringa, Mason and Smith are fencing great and I look for them to have a great day at Tufts on Saturday at the conference championships."
