Pioneers dropped by Bobcats in first NEC game
(Fairfield, CT) - Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) made 12 saves and Alex Melillo (Southbury, CT) scored her second goal of the year, but the Quinnipiac Bobcats beat the Sacred Heart Pioneer field hockey team 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Campus Field.
Melillo gave SHU the first lead of the game at the 11:56 mark , hustling inside the top of the circle and slamming a one-timer off a pass from Dana Luhrs (Milford, PA) for a 1-0 lead. However, Kristen Engelke scored the equalizer on a rebound of her own shot at the 30:16 mark to tie the game before the half.
Jess Rusin scored the game winning goal at the 39:56 mark, spinning inside the circle after receiving a pass from Kaitlyn Notarianni and shoveling in the go-ahead goal . Rusin added an insurance goal at the 52:46 mark on a rebound off a shot from Kimberly Cunniff.
Stow was sharp all game long, aggressively challenging numerous shots and making six saves in both halves. However, the Bobcats swarmed her cage throughout the latter part of the first half and most of the second half, beating her on rebounds twice.
Sacred Heart falls to 0-1 in Northeast Conference play and will host one more non-conference opponent in Davidson on Tuesday afternoon at 12:00 pm. The Pioneers are in the midst of a stretch of four home games in eight days, with NEC opponents Monmouth and Rider also scheduled for this upcoming Friday and Sunday.
