Pioneers Generate Offense, But Lose to Missouri State 8-4

(Fenton, MO) – Hillary Lawless opened the scoring for MSU at 3:12 with a hard shot inside the far post from the left side. Less than a minute later, Casey Bayliss made it 2-0 Bears by stealing an outlet pass and scoring on a breakaway at 4:20. Sacred Heart got on the board on the first career goal by Sarah Bergman (Blandon, PA), who deflected a penalty corner shot from Nikki Kimborowicz (Biddefored, ME) at 18:02. However, Missouri State closed out the half with three goals – a tally by Sarah Cusick at 24:29 and two more from Bayliss at 25:21 and 30:49 to complete a hat trick.

 The Pioneers dominated the second half chances by outshooting the Bears 21-7, aided by 12 of SHU's 17 penalty corners for the game (MSU only had one penalty corner in the entire contest). However, Cusick's second goal of the game gave MSU a 6-1 lead at 40:25. Kate Boyd (Nottingham, NH) then scored for SHU at 43:00, knocking in a rebound. Lawless got that goal back for MSU, tipping a pass across the cage from Chelsey Medlock at 48:14. The Pioneers answered on goals by Alex Mellilo (Southbury, CT) at 50:11 on a penalty corner and Chelsea Carlson (Peterborough, NH) at 51:45 off a scramble in front of the cage, with Boyd registering an assist. MSU closed out the scoring at 67:23 on an unassisted breakaway goal.

 Kelsey Cox (Monroe, CT) made three saves on five shots in relief of Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT).

The Pioneers next play Friday afternoon at Dartmouth at 2:00 p.m.
