(Fairfield, CT) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers Field Hockey team wrapped up the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon at Campus Field with a tough 2-1 loss against the Explorers from LaSalle University.
The Pioneers looked to get on the scoreboard early, but were denied when Lindsay Kasten (Fair Haven, NJ) riffled a shot off the post. The two teams battled scoreless until Becca Freed scored the game's first goal on an assist from Neelam Kumar with 17:10 to play in the first half.
The Pioneers believed momentarily they had tied the game with 11:30 to play in the half, but what would have been Hannah Robinson's (Watertown, MA) fourth goal of the season was called back because of a high stick.
With 2:20 left in the half, junior Nikki Kimborowicz (Biddeford, ME) prevented the Explorers from taking a 2-0 advantage with a very nice defensive safe. The Pioneers would trail the Explorers 1-0 at halftime.
The Pioneers had a chance to tie the game less than 10 minutes into the half, when Alex Melillo (Southbury, CT) made a diving shot that fell just wide. Less than a minute later, Robinson did bury her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Melillo to tie the score with 25:13 to play.
LaSalle had their chance to regain the lead, but Heather Baretta's shot hit the post with just over 24 minutes to play. Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) made two brilliant diving saves in a row to keep the game tied for the Pioneers with 15:30 left in the second half.
The Explorers once again thought they had retaken the lead with 15:05 to play, with a shot from Becca Chylack, but the shot hit the inside of the post and barely stayed out.
The Explorers eventually did retake the lead with 13:33 left in the game on a goal from Chylack off of two nice passes from Freed and Kumar on a corner, proving to be the game-winner,
The Pioneers are back in action as they open their NEC schedule when the face St. Francis PA on Friday, October 7th at 4:00.
