Fairfield, CT—The Sacred Heart Pioneers Field Hockey team took to Campus Field Friday afternoon in their Northeast Conference opener against the Saint Francis Red Flash. Unfortunately, for the Pioneers it did not go as hoped as Saint Francis defeated Sacred Heart 4-0.
The Red Flash got on the board early with a goal from Autumn Pellman 3:40 in to the game. The Pioneers and Red Flash battled for the next 22:59, when Pellman scored her second goal of the game, her team-leading eighth of the season. The rest of the half would be scoreless as the Pioneers trailed 2-0 at the half.
It did not take long for the Red Flash to extend their lead in the second half. 35 seconds in, Jocelyn Scilla scored her fifth goal of the season on an assist from Pellman.
The Red Flash capped their scoring when Kellie Mason scored an unassisted goal to make it a 4-0 Red Flash lead with 31:06 left in the game.
Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT) made eight saves for the Pioneers in goal, while her counterpart Katelyn Vitali made 4 saves and recorded her first shutout of the season.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday at Campus Field when they take on the Colonials of Robert Morris at noon.
