Fairfield, Conn – The sacred Heart field hockey team was defeated 4-2 by the Bryant Bulldogs on Friday evening. It was senior day for the Pioneers; the nine graduating seniors were recognized before the game. The Pioneers record falls to 5-11 overall and 0-6 in the NEC.
Bryant got off to a fast start taking a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute of the game. Sophomore Abigail Armstrong scored the Bulldogs first goal on an assist from junior Kayleigh Ballantyne. After letting in the early goal the Pioneers started to control the action, eventually evening the score. Senior Kate Boyd (Nottingham, NH) put the Pioneers on the board with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Boyd grabbed her own rebound and knocked it passed Bryant goalie Megan Hancock. It was Boyd's third goal of the season.
The second half brought a faster pace to the game with both teams having numerous chances to score. Bryant took the lead in the 40th minute of the game, Ballantyne one timed a pass from senior Rachel Blitz to make the score 2-1. The Bulldogs would add to their lead in the 53rd minute. Junior Mallory Hancock would backhand a goal off another assist by Blitz. The Pioneers would cut into the lead in the 58th minute, senior forward Leah Salindong (Spring City, PA )knocked one passed Hancock to cut the lead in half. It was Salindong's first goal of the season. The goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Sarah Bergman (Blandon, PA), her fourth assist of the season. 3-2 would be as close as the Pioneers would get on the afternoon. The Bulldogs put the icing on the cake in the 68th minute with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Brittany Vasconcelos.
The Pioneers finish their season at Siena on Sunday afternoon.
